Yesterday my father graduated from the Wesley Theological Seminary with a Master of Theological Studies. He’s a very interesting guy to talk to over a few pints. The graduation ceremony was held at the Washington National Cathedral. I had never been to the National Cathedral before yesterday and I have to admit I was a bit overwhelmed by how massive and how beautiful the place is. If you’ve never been to this cathedral before, it’s got some pretty amazing Gothic architecture going on and definitely worth checking out. And even if you are a religion hater, I think there’s still a good chance you’ll feel humbled once you step inside. I sat way up high in the north balcony for the ceremony and I felt like a four year-old kid on six Mountain Dews and an entire box of Fruity Pebbles. No ability to sit still and focus on any one thing. Just staring up and around at all the gargoyles and stained glass windows, trying to jog my memory about the different stories and events the windows portrayed. As the sun moved across the windows, the stained glass became even more brilliant, which gave me eyegasm after eyegasm.
Behold!
So was it good for you too?

that’s a fascinating building. the most recent gothic cathedral in teh worlds. idea by george washington and pierre l’enfant. when i was in highschool i went to a concert in there with medieval instruments and it got all medieval on my ass.

Congrats to your dad! I had a great time chatting with him at J. Patrick’s, over pints, naturally.
And speaking of religion haters, I usually take the time to visit cathedrals and churches wherever I’m vacationing. Those places are beautiful.

I scrolled down so I had the stained glass and the super fried chicken box in my window, and I could have sworn I’d died and gone to Heaven.

congrats, dad. my grandfather was a minister and had a PHD in religion & philosophy. he was invited to be part of sunday services at the national cathedral many moons ago. i love that building. i always had a silly fantasy of getting engaged in there just because it feels so close to my g-pa who has since passed. did you know you could lay the national monument down on it’s side in the cathedral? yep, it’s that long!

I think National is the one where the stonecarvers made gargoyle portraits of each other on one side of the bldg. It’s a cute story…
Me big atheist however: as a half-ass student of pictorial communication, I can say that you just can’t beat the medieval Catholic traditions of decoration. I traveled all thru southern Europe gawking at statues of decapitated saints and I bet you I know more about Catholic saints than 90% of born or believer Catholics.
AH: “I traveled all thru southern Europe gawking at statues of decapitated saints…” (I’m jealous.) And it’s true that for fun I love reading about the lives of various saints and martyrs. I even have a dictionary of saints. I can’t help myself. How did you know?!
